We’ve had another busy Bahama season, I can hardly belief how time is flying by… Our Bahamas cruising schedule has been non-stop work hard-play hard for us, mostly survivin’ and thrivin’ on Scorch Conch Salad, Fish fry, and peas n rice.

Since the ferocious CAT 5 Hurricane Dorian wreaked havoc on the beautiful Abacos in Sept 2019, the resilient spirit of the community has prevailed, slowly but surely rebuilding and recovering. The Abacos, once again ready to welcome visitors with open arms, have been working tirelessly to regain their status as a thriving boating destination. In light of this remarkable progress, I couldn’t contain my enthusiasm when a client recently requested a cruising itinerary to the Abacos! It was an incredible opportunity for me to witness firsthand the strength, determination, and vibrant spirit of the locals, while supporting marinas and local businesses. Rest assured, the Abacos are well on their way to reclaiming their rightful place as a beloved paradise for boating enthusiasts.

As we make our Northbound approach to the picturesque Sea of Abaco, we take a scenic route that guides us east of the Southernmost point in Great Abaco, known as “Hole in the Wall.” This special place derives its name from the magnificent break in the limestone rock wall, inviting us to capture countless memorable photos of this natural wonder.
With its fascinating geological formation, the sight of the Hole in the Wall proves to be truly awe-inspiring. As the ocean waves crash against the rugged rocks, they create a mesmerizing display of power and beauty. Standing there in the presence of such raw natural forces, one can’t help but feel humbled by the vastness and untamed energy of the sea.
Beyond its visual appeal, the Hole in the Wall holds a rich history and mythical significance for the locals. It is said to be a place where legends intertwine with reality, where stories of pirates and ancient mariners are whispered through the breeze. Exploring the nearby shoreline, you might stumble upon hidden coves and secret caves, each with its own tantalizing tale waiting to be discovered.

As we sail through the Northbound route, the Sea of Abaco unfurls before us like a canvas of endless possibilities. Its crystal-clear turquoise waters, dotted with colorful coral reefs and vibrant marine life, offer a sanctuary for snorkelers, divers, and avid fishermen alike. Secluded islands and quaint coastal communities line the shoreline, inviting weary travelers to dock and experience the genuine Bahamian hospitality.

We approach the sea of Abaco from seaward via “North Bar Channel” with a 2 meter rolling Easterly swell on the stern and 30+ ft Under keel clearance.

First stop on any Abacos cruising itinerary might be Abaco Beach Resort in Marsh Harbor, Great Abaco. Centrally located Marsh Harbor serves as an ideal jumping point to nearby islands. Fuel on site is set to competitive prices and regularly cycled by the revolving door of Sport-fishing community hosting frequent events on site centered by a swim-up bar.
The newly rebuilt docks are some of the best I’ve seen around the Bahamas. Incoming guests may arrive by commercial airline via the Leonard M. Thompson International Airport. Provisions can be found in abundance at Maxwell’s Grocery.

The next stop on our Abacos tour is the charming island of Elbow Cay. Elbow Cay lies a mere 5nm East of Marsh Harbor, entrance to the inner harbor of Hope Town is only to be passed during High Tide for our 6′ draft.

We are welcomed to Hope town firstly by the unmistakable Red and White Candy-cane striped Lighthouse (last remaining functioning kerosene lighthouse in the world!) and a Warm and friendly Bahamian “Welcome Home” by longstanding Dockmaster Robert Williams of Hopetown Marina. Robert and his staff set a high bar accommodating each and every one of our requests from shore-side reservations to golf cart rentals, dry cleaning, and provide the flexibility when our schedules change. Robert we appreciate you!

If you’ve never been to Elbow Cay, you should know part of the fun of visiting is riding the Harbor Ferry across the mooring field to get from the marina to the village and golf cart parking. The ferry is free (+gratuity) call the operator as you need him. He doesn’t mind staying late if you ask in advance.

Elbow Cay is a small island with colonial-inspired cottages and stunning sea cliffs. Firefly is perfect for a romantic date night, while Turtle Hill offers beautiful views and drinks. Hope Town Inn Restaurant is great for a delicious meal right by the docks. Explore the island’s charm, relax on sandy beaches, and enjoy the tranquility of Elbow Cay.

Picture yourself cruising around the Abacos and stumbling upon the legendary Pete’s Pub in Little Harbor. Now, this place is a hidden gem! With a Gallery, foundry, and a Restaurant and Bar where “The Elite Eat in their Bare Feet,” it’s the hotspot for folks who want to feel fancy while wiggling their toes in the sand. Even though our boat couldn’t handle the shallow waters, we made sure to swing by for a day trip.

Our Abaco adventure continues to the fabulous Great Guana Cay! Prepare to be amazed as we uncover the secret hideouts of the exclusive and elusive Baker’s Bay Club and Marina, where only the lucky few have the privilege of setting foot.
But don’t sweat it if your name isn’t on the guest list! The charming Orchid Bay Marina comes to the rescue with its no-fuss transient dockage, welcoming everyone with open arms (or should we say, open harbor?).
And let’s not forget the exciting underwater escapades offered by Dive Guana. As if that’s not enough, these underwater experts also moonlight as the island’s golf cart rental crew. Just remember to keep an eye on your chosen set of wheels after a day of fun at “Nippers and Grabbers” because let’s face it, in the spirit of island festivities, keys tend to mysteriously find their way into the wrong ignition!

Green Turtle Cay, the final destination on our Abacos tour, promises an absolutely delightful experience. This idyllic island offers two marina options, namely the renowned Bluff House Marina and the esteemed Green Turtle Club. Each Offers a charm of its own, Bluff House is situated on the Abaco Sound offers a tiki beach bar with volleyball and hammocks, with sweeping paranoramic views atop the hill, and a saltwater swimming pool. Green Turtle Club offer a tradition of fine dining in an elegant and electic dining atmosphere with dock accommodations for much larger vessels. There are a number of outstanding anchorages in the area offering impressive end of the world views and sea life abounds. Green Turtle Cay has made a remarkable comeback after the rebuilding and recovery process, surpassing all expectations.

With its serene beauty and tranquil charm, the Sea of Abaco truly provides a sanctuary for those seeking to escape. Whether you’re an adventurous sailor looking for a new nautical adventure or a nature enthusiast yearning to explore the wonders of the sea, this idyllic corner of the world offers endless opportunities for relaxation, exploration, and creating lifelong memories.
